The Netherlands has what it takes to become a world leader in the development and demonstration of CCU-technology.

FutureCarbonNL is a partnership of Dutch universities, knowledge institutions, industry, SMEs and startups.

Our ambition is to build a world-leading carbon technology sector in the Netherlands. FutureCarbonNL focuses on the research, development, demonstration and marketing of technologies that reduce CO2 and convert CO into new, sustainable materials, fuels and (animal) food. A strong carbon-tech sector is needed to move away from fossil carbon sources and contributes to the sustainable earning capacity of the Netherlands.

National Growth Fund

With our excellent knowledge position and strong, innovative chemical and technology industries, the Netherlands is in an excellent position to develop into a leader in Carbon Capture and Utilisation (CCU). To accelerate, FutureCarbonNL is participating in Round 3 of the National Growth Fund.

FutureCarbonNL distinguishes itself by being open to all parties, from startups and SMEs to large companies, who want to submit ideas or project proposals already at this stage. This helps us better pitch the proposal, and connect parties.

About CCU

CO₂ als grondstof

FutureCarbonNL defines Carbon Capture and Utilisation (CCU) - or carbon capture and utilisation - as the technology that captures carbon from CO2 and CO to make new building blocks for sustainable materials, fuels and (animal) food. Besides recycling and biobased production, the world needs these technologies to make products without fossil resources.

Technology routes
To reduce CO2 and CO into new building blocks, several technology routes are possible. FutureCarbonNL focuses initially on biological, electro/photochemical, thermocatalytic conversion technologies and integrated capture and conversion. Concrete results include new products, catalysts, reactors, pilot plants, demo plants and new value chains.

CCU technology we use for a circular carbon economy and to meet the growing demand for products worldwide.

Made in Holland

The Netherlands has everything it needs to become a leader in CCU technology, contributing to a circular, net-zero society. Not only in the Netherlands itself, but also in the rest of the world. Application in its own home market provides industry with the necessary experience with the new technology and production processes and the ability to scale them up. Moreover, the Netherlands can serve as an international example. In addition, production in the home market can increase strategic independence for key raw materials.

Why in the Netherlands? We have:

Presence of leading (bio)chemical and technological research institutes.
A strong chemical industry willing to invest in sustainability and circularity.
A strong knowledge and innovation sector and public-private partnerships.
Availability of needed green energy. The Netherlands is located on the North Sea with offshore wind farms, and seaports for importing green hydrogen.
